WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF COP 29, THE PRESIDENT OF UZBEKISTAN PUT FORWARD A NUMBER OF INITIATIVES REGARDING GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
November 12, 2024On November 12, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev addressed the plenary session of the Summit of World Leaders within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is taking place these days in Baku.
The event is attended by heads of state and governments of more than 80 countries, heads of reputable international organizations and financial institutions.
At the beginning of his speech, the head of our state, having sincerely congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the successful organization of the historic summit, expressed support for the active efforts of the Azerbaijani side to expand international cooperation in the fight against modern climate challenges.
As the leader of our country noted, today climate change has become a major global challenge, directly affecting the intensification of geopolitical tensions.
Overcoming poverty, ensuring food and energy security, and access to water and resources are getting worse. The effects of climate change are acutely felt in the Central Asian region.
They become an obstacle to improving the quality of life of the population and the implementation of national development strategies.
The main goal under the Paris Agreement is to prevent an outstripping increase in air temperature in the region, keeping it within 1.5-2 degrees in the current century.
In this regard, Uzbekistan is implementing large-scale reforms to achieve carbon neutrality. By 2030, it is planned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent. By 2050, these commitments will be expanded. The share of “green” energy will reach 40 percent.
Clusters of electric vehicles and “green” hydrogen, solar and wind generation hubs are being created. As part of the Yashil Makon program, green areas are being expanded.
The President of our country invited representatives of the COP29 countries to participate in the Global Youth Festival of Digital “Green” Initiatives, which will be held in the Aral Sea region on May 15 next year – International Climate Day.
In conclusion, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reiterated Uzbekistan’s readiness for open dialogue and partnership on the path to common well-being and “green” development.
