RECOMMENDED TEACHING MATERIALS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

With the advantage of no longer using traditional books as there are unlimited, we still have difficulty choosing reliable books to implement in the classroom. Now you are given examples of books that can be used in both English and teaching the language. Teaching English to speakers of other languages involves a variety of materials to engage students, enhance understanding, and promote language acquisition. With diverse learners in the classroom, it’s essential to select materials that cater to different levels, styles, and needs.
Teaching books for English language learners (ELLs) are a diverse range of educational resources designed to facilitate the acquisition of English proficiency. These books cater to different age groups, language levels, and educational contexts. We will divide these resources into different age categories. As a teacher or ELL, you have to focus on your age while selecting books. For example: there is no way you use the same book for kids who are beginners and adults too. So, here are some examples of books that are divided into age categories:
1. Family and Friends
It’s a children’s books that focus on the themes of family and friendship, teaching kids about relationships, sharing, love, and cooperation. Titles involve charming illustrations and engaging stories that resonate with young readers.
The series consists of six main books:
Family and Friends 1, Family and Friends 2, Family and Friends 3,
Family and Friends 4, Family and Friends 5, Family and Friends 6.
Each book is divided into units that introduce new vocabulary, grammar points, and language skills. Typically, each book contains around 10-12 units, along with supplementary materials, practice activities, and assessments to enhance learning.
2. English World
It’s typically an educational series designed for teaching English language skills, primarily aimed at children and young learners. They include: Textbooks, Activity books, Integration of skills, Grammar and vocabulary. Mostly it’s common to use this book in non-English speaking countries where English taught as a second language.
The English World series is a comprehensive English language course designed for young learners.
It generally consists of six main levels, which are:
English World 1, English World 2, English World 3,
English World 4, English World 5 English World 6.
Each level typically contains 10 units, though this can vary slightly depending on the specific edition. The units are designed to progressively build language skills, incorporating vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities.
3. English File
English File is a well-known series of English language textbooks designed for adult and young adult learners. It focuses on building practical English skills through engaging content and real-life situations.
The series typically consists of several levels:
English File Beginner, English File Elementary, English File Pre-Intermediate,
English File Intermediate, English File Upper-Intermediate, English File Advanced
Each level usually contains 12 units, with a variety of themes and topics that cover vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation practice. Each unit is designed to be interactive and includes materials such as listening exercises, speaking tasks, and written activities to enhance comprehension and fluency. In addition to the coursebook, there are supplementary materials available, including workbooks, teacher’s books, and online resources, which make it a comprehensive choice for learners and educators alike.
Choosing the right materials for English language learners is crucial for effective teaching and learning. A combination of textbooks, multimedia resources, interactive activities, and authentic materials fosters a comprehensive learning environment.
By incorporating diverse resources, educators can meet the varied needs of their students, ensuring a more engaging and effective language learning experience. These materials not only help learners develop language skills but also encourage them to embrace and enjoy the language-learning journey.
