UZBEK STUDENTS LEARN ITALIAN WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM | INTERVIEW WITH MARCO PAOLI LEGLER

February 25, 2023

Uzbekistan State World Languages University, if you want to be fluent in a particular language, it is, indubitably, the best place for you.

University offers a wide range of languages to learn not only from professional local teachers but also from native speakers. You can find teachers who come from different parts of the world that make a way for students to learn the language along with the culture of that country.

It is obvious that students are grateful to have such an opportunity. What about teachers? What is their opinion about teaching Uzbek students?

We conducted a small interview to find answers to these questions. Here is given some insights of an Italian teacher.

Could you, please, introduce yourself?

– My name is Marco Paoli Legler. I have been teaching Italian language at the World Languages University since 2016.

Are you satisfied with working in Uzbekistan?

– Definitely, I greatly appreciate the interest of the students and the kindness of my colleague.

Teaching Italian in Tashkent, in Uzbekistan is a very beautiful experience for me, because I notice how Uzbek students interest in Italian and Italy.

Everywhere in Tashkent, you can see Italian words, and this is very surprising for me. In Alisher Navoi National Opera Theater in Tashkent, singers sing some Italian operas and songs. Also, I was astonished by the wonderfulness of the Uzbek people and their kindness to me.

Have you ever faced with some difficulties while teaching Italian to Uzbek students? If yes, could you give any examples?

– Yes, there are some difficulties to explain themes if Uzbek students do not understand English or Russian. Because Italian and Uzbek languages totally differ from one another.

That is why, I usually teach Russian groups, because they understand Russian very well. It is easier for them. But for all the students, it is somehow difficult to explain particular themes, such as articles. Because Uzbek people do not use articles in their sentences. So it is difficult for them to understand where they have to use a definite article or where they have to use an indefinite article and why?

What are the differences between Uzbek students and Italian students?

– Uzbek students are very keen on learning languages. They can usually speak more than one language.

They can speak Uzbek, Russian, and English. So in this case, it is easy for them to learn another foreign language.

Italian students do not speak any foreign language by nature. They speak only Italian. That is why it is so difficult for them to speak in English. Because English belongs to German languages that are very different from Italian. But I am surprised by the fact of how quickly Uzbek students speak Italian. They do not have pronunciation problems which makes it easy for them to speak Italian.

I am very grateful to prof. Marco Paoli Legler for his friendly conversation and I wish him success in his work. Let him be surrounded by diligent, intelligent and energetic students.

P.S. Being a student myself, after this interview, I was filled with deep respect for the desire of Uzbek youth to learn new languages.
